Wolf Creek Weimaraner Rescue - FAQs
Volunteers are at the heart of Wolf Creek Weimaraner Rescue. Unfortunately, we simply do not have the resources to field phone inquiries at all times. Many of your questions can be answered right on our website. If you're interested in adopting, please fill out an Adoption Application and one of our adoption coordinators will be able to answer all of your questions once you begin the adoption process. If you have other questions, please submit your question via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and a volunteer will assist you.
All of our Weimaraners have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and vet checked prior to being placed up for adoption. There are numerous expenses involved with caring for rescued Weims until they find their forever home....veterinary care, food, heartworm medication, and boarding costs are just some of the expenses that rescue organizations incur. Our adoption fees, fundraisers, and donations help to defray our expenses and enable us to continue rescuing Weimaraners in need.
Our adoption fees are as follows:
0-1 $350.00 1-6 $300.00 6 - older $200.00
All of our Weimaraners are spayed/neutered prior to becoming available for adoption. Quite simply, AKC registration is not a matter of concern for us when rescuing Weimaraners. The majority of our rescued Weimaraners come to us from shelters and as strays. If they are surrendered to us, it's possible their original owners may provide us with their papers and pedigree. If you're interested in having your Weimaraner compete in obedience or field trials, AKC papers are generally not required for such events.
If you feel you can no longer keep your Weim because you're experiencing behavioral issues, we strongly encourage you to consult with your veterinarian first to rule out any medical condition. They will also be your best resource in recommending behaviorists/trainers in your area that can assist you in addressing problems. Sadly, we have received many dogs over the years whose owners simply weren't willing to work on training issues...many of these problems could have been remedied with a little time and commitment. If there are other family circumstances that are impacting your ability to provide care for your dog, please complete our online Surrender Form. A representative from WCWR will be in contact with you to discuss options and whether we can accept your Weimaraner into rescue.
You most certainly can! We've had many successful adoptions to surrounding states and points further. When we have prospective adopters who live outside of Tennessee, we work diligently to coordinate those out-of-state adoptions. While an out-of-state adoption often requires travel on your part, we do try to assist when possible.
It really depends on the Weim! If a Weimaraner is raised around cats, they may do quite well with them. Be mindful that Weimaraners are natural hunters and have a high prey drive. Many Weims often view cats as just another furry creature to be caught and may find them as tantalizing as squirrels. In short, some Weims may be cat-friendly and some may not. With proper guidance from their caregiver, some Weims can learn to peacefully co-exist with cats. If you find a stray Weimaraner, check their collar for any identifying information. If no collar is worn, the next step would be to take the dog to your vet or local shelter to have the dog scanned for a micro-chip identification. In some cases, the dog may even have a tattoo for identification purposes. If you are not able to keep the dog until his or her owner is found, please submit a Surrender Form. While we cannot always accept every dog into our rescue, we will do our best to assist you. Even if we cannot accept the dog, we can place a photo of the dog on our website to increase the chances of it being successfully reunited with his or her family.
Weimaraners are excellent family dogs. Most Weims will do best with older children. We generally don't recommend Weimaraners for families with very young children, as many Weimaraners often don't realize their own strength and can easily plow over small children. All dogs are uniquely different though, and some Weims can be exceptional around small children. If you have children, we will work with you in finding the best match for you and your family.
We don't require that you have a fence, but we strongly encourage it. Dogs always benefit from having a fenced yard where they are free to exercise and remain safe from harm. If a Weimaraner owner is committed to providing regular exercise, some Weimaraners can do well without a fenced yard. We do assess prospective homes with safety in mind. We will not place dogs in homes where there are no plans for containment and potential hazards, such as living in a high traffic area with no fence.
We are happy to help as much as possible should your Weimaraner go missing. Aside from your checking with area shelters, placing newspaper ads, and posting flyers, we can provide additional assistance by posting your missing Weimaraner on our website. Please provide us with a photo and as much identifying information as possible. You may provide these details via our Surrender Form. State on the form the fact that your Weimaraner is missing and you want him/her featured on our website. There is also a relatively new online resource for missing pets called Find Toto. This is a paid service that places robo calls in your calling area to alert neighbors of your missing dog.
